T3 and T4 for Fat Loss: Thyroid Hormones Explained

Your cut has been stalled at the same weight for three weeks. Calories are already low and you have dropped them twice more without anything happening. Someone at the gym tells you your thyroid has downregulated and that T3 will restart it. They are not entirely wrong โ€” but T3 is a systemic hormone that sets the metabolic rate of every cell in your body, and the version of this that goes badly goes badly quickly.

Used conservatively, with an anabolic base and a proper taper, T3 is an effective tool for a stalled prep. Used at the doses people throw around online, it strips muscle and leaves your thyroid suppressed for months. This guide covers the mechanism, honest dosing, why the taper is non-negotiable, and the bloodwork that tells you where you actually stand.

What T3 and T4 Do

Your thyroid produces two hormones. T4 (thyroxine, sold as levothyroxine) is mostly a storage form โ€” relatively inactive, with a long half-life of roughly seven days. T3 (triiodothyronine, sold as liothyronine) is the active hormone that binds thyroid receptors and sets cellular metabolic rate. Its half-life is around one day.

About 80% of your circulating T3 is not made by the thyroid at all. It is converted from T4 in peripheral tissue โ€” mainly liver and kidney โ€” by deiodinase enzymes. That conversion step is the control valve, and it is the reason dieting stalls.

When you sustain a caloric deficit, your body downregulates T4-to-T3 conversion and shifts more T4 toward reverse T3, an inactive metabolite. Metabolic rate falls. This is not a malfunction; it is an energy conservation response, and it is precisely what a three-week plateau at low calories looks like.

T3 vs T4: Why Bodybuilders Use T3

T3 is preferred for cutting for one reason: it bypasses the conversion bottleneck. If the problem is that your body has stopped turning T4 into T3, adding more T4 does not fix it. T4 is the milder option and the more sensible one for someone whose issue is genuinely low thyroid output rather than diet-induced downregulation.

The Catabolism Problem

This is the trade-off that decides whether T3 helps you or costs you.

Thyroid hormone increases protein turnover โ€” both synthesis and breakdown. In a caloric surplus with adequate anabolic signalling, that skews toward remodelling. In a deficit, it skews toward breakdown. T3 does not preferentially target fat; it raises the metabolic rate of all tissue, and skeletal muscle is metabolically expensive tissue that your body is happy to give up when energy is short.

Two consequences follow:

  • T3 without an anabolic base is a poor trade. Most of the people who report "T3 made me flat and weak" ran it standalone in a deficit. A testosterone base at minimum changes the tissue-partitioning picture substantially.
  • Dose scales muscle loss faster than it scales fat loss. Going from 25 mcg to 75 mcg does not triple fat loss. It does reliably increase lean tissue loss. This is the core argument for conservative dosing.

Keep protein high โ€” 2.0โ€“2.5 g per kg of body weight โ€” and keep resistance training heavy. Dropping training intensity while running T3 in a deficit is the fastest way to lose the muscle you are trying to reveal.

Conservative Dosing

For context, a healthy thyroid produces the equivalent of roughly 25โ€“30 mcg of T3 per day. Doses above that are supraphysiological.

Total cycle length: 6โ€“8 weeks including the taper. Split the daily dose in two โ€” morning and early afternoon โ€” to smooth blood levels, given the short half-life. Avoid late-evening dosing, which disrupts sleep.

Doses of 75โ€“100 mcg circulate in bodybuilding forums. They exist, they are used in contest prep by people with substantial anabolic support and coaching, and they are not what a first T3 run should look like.

Why You Taper

Exogenous T3 suppresses TSH, the pituitary signal that tells your thyroid to produce hormone. Suppressed TSH means reduced endogenous output. Stop T3 abruptly and you are left with neither the exogenous hormone nor your own production โ€” a temporary hypothyroid state marked by fatigue, cold intolerance, sluggishness and, predictably, fat regain.

The taper gives the HPT axis time to restart. A straightforward reverse of your ladder works: if you finished at 50 mcg, drop to 37.5 for four days, 25 for four days, 12.5 for four days, then stop. Longer or higher-dose cycles need a proportionally longer taper.

Keep calories from being at their lowest during the taper window. Coming off T3 into an aggressive deficit is how people undo a prep in two weeks.

Side Effects

EffectCauseResponse
Elevated resting heart rateIncreased metabolic and cardiac demandTrack it daily. A sustained rise above ~100 bpm at rest means reduce the dose.
Palpitations, arrhythmiaExcess doseReduce immediately. Persistent arrhythmia means stop and seek medical assessment.
Tremor, anxiety, irritabilitySupraphysiological thyroid levelsDose is too high โ€” step back down.
Heat intolerance, sweatingRaised thermogenesisExpected. Manage hydration and electrolytes.
InsomniaDosing too late in the dayMove the second dose earlier.
Muscle loss, strength dropCatabolism in a deficitRaise protein, keep training heavy, lower the dose.
Bone density lossChronic supraphysiological useA long-term concern โ€” keep cycles short and infrequent.

Anyone with existing cardiac disease, uncontrolled hypertension or an arrhythmia should not use T3 for body composition purposes.

Stacking

T3 with a testosterone base. The most important pairing. An anabolic base substantially offsets the catabolic effect and is what separates a productive T3 run from a costly one.

T3 with Clenbuterol. The mechanisms are complementary โ€” Clenbuterol is a beta-2 agonist working on thermogenesis and mildly anti-catabolic, T3 raises baseline metabolic rate. The problem is that both raise heart rate, so the cardiac load is additive. If you run them together, use the lower end of both dose ranges and monitor resting heart rate daily. See the Clenbuterol dosing protocol for that side of the stack.

T3 with semaglutide. Different axes entirely โ€” one suppresses intake, the other raises expenditure โ€” so there is no pharmacological conflict. But combining aggressive appetite suppression with a catabolic hormone in a deficit is a fast route to lean mass loss. If you are using both, protein intake becomes the thing that decides your outcome. The semaglutide guide covers that in detail.

Bloodwork

Test at baseline, at weeks 4โ€“6, and roughly six weeks after the taper ends.

  • TSH โ€” will be suppressed on cycle; the marker you watch for recovery afterwards
  • Free T3 โ€” the active hormone; where your actual level sits
  • Free T4 โ€” typically falls on exogenous T3, which is expected
  • Reverse T3 โ€” optional, but useful if you suspect a conversion problem rather than simple downregulation

Get a baseline before you start. If TSH is already abnormal, you have a clinical thyroid question rather than a body composition one, and that needs a doctor rather than a cutting protocol. Post-cycle, if TSH has not returned toward its baseline range after six to eight weeks, seek medical assessment rather than waiting it out.

Levothyroxine: The Milder Route

T4 gets dismissed in bodybuilding circles, but it has a real place. It is gentler, harder to overshoot given its long half-life, less catabolic, and it works with your conversion machinery rather than bypassing it. If your baseline bloodwork shows genuinely low thyroid output rather than a diet-induced stall, T4 is the more appropriate compound and the one a physician would actually prescribe.

The trade-off is patience: weeks to steady state rather than days, and no help at all if your problem is impaired conversion.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will T3 permanently damage my thyroid?

Short cycles at conservative doses with a proper taper do not typically cause permanent damage โ€” TSH and endogenous production usually recover within weeks. The risk rises with high doses, long durations, repeated back-to-back cycles, and abrupt cessation. If TSH has not recovered eight weeks after tapering off, get it assessed rather than assuming it will resolve on its own.

Can I run T3 without any anabolic compounds?

You can, but the risk-to-benefit is poor. Without an anabolic base in a caloric deficit, a meaningful share of what you lose will be lean tissue. If you are not running anything anabolic, keep the dose at 12.5โ€“25 mcg, keep protein at the top of the range, train heavy, and accept a slower rate of loss.

Does T3 work if my diet is not dialled in?

No. T3 raises the rate at which you burn energy; it does not create a deficit. Without one, a raised metabolic rate is simply matched by higher intake and nothing changes except your heart rate. T3 breaks a plateau in an established deficit โ€” it does not substitute for one.

Morning or split dosing?

Split. T3's half-life is around 24 hours but blood levels still peak and trough noticeably within a day. Morning and early afternoon gives steadier levels and reduces the jittery peak that a single large dose produces. Keep the second dose well clear of bedtime.

How soon will I notice it working?

Body temperature and appetite usually shift within three to five days. Scale movement takes one to two weeks to become clear against normal daily fluctuation. If nothing has changed after two weeks at 25 mcg in a genuine deficit, the problem is more likely the deficit than the dose.
